Etiology 
Almost always the result of rheumatic fever
Less common causes
Congenital MS
Systemic lupus erythematosus
Rheumatoid arthritis
Atrial myxoma 
Bacterial endocarditis. 
Epidemiology 
Rare in industrialized countries in patients
